Massage is much more than just relaxation.

When we think about relaxation, we think about: sleeping in until 2pm, cozying up with a book by the fire, watching a whole Netflix series in one go, spa days and of course, getting a massage. Right, it can help to relax – but especially massage therapy can do much more than that. Three examples:

It eases muscle pain
You’ve had a long day, and someone gives your shoulders and neck a little massage – you instantly feel better, right? The same effect occurs when you’re struggling with chronic pain issues.  Massage therapy plays an important part in pain management. It stimulates circulation, which encourages the body’s healing resources to flow more freely. And it can target certain trigger points in your muscles (knot or spasm), causing them to soften and release.

It soothes anxiety and depression
Human touch in a safe, friendly, and professional environment can be incredibly therapeutic and relaxing. Numerous studies report that massage therapy can help significantly reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Massage decreases the sympathetic tone (fight or flight mode) and increasing the parasympathetic response (calming body reaction).

It improves sleep
Massage can actually help you to sleep deeper and more restful.  It promotes relaxation and calms your body and mind. Sleep quality has a lot to do with how active your nervous system. Massage therapy slows down your nervous system and reduces the production of stress hormones and thus relaxes body and mind. Plus, when you’re getting deeper, more restorative sleep, that in turn contributes to overall pain relief.
