Golfer’s or Tennis Elbow?

I’m pretty sure you’ve heard of someone suffering from one or the other. And it didn’t even have to be a tennis or golf player. They are umbrella terms for an inflammation of the elbow, Golfer’s on the inner side and Tennis on the outer. We have two main muscle groups in our forearm: those that extend the wrist and those that flex the wrist. These groups form each a common tendon that inserts at a bony prominence inside (flexors) or outside (extensors) of the elbow. Repetitive movements can damage these muscles and tendon, and this results in having pain on the outside or inside of your elbow and along the forearm. The pain typically develops gradually, and you may end up with weak hands and wrists especially when gripping, difficulty to move your elbow, numbness or a tingling sensation radiating to your fingers.

Common activities that can contribute to this condition are first of course golf and tennis but also gardening, racket sports in general, throwing sports, typing, playing a musical instrument or videogames, working with vibrating tools, painting, plumbing, carpentry and so on. Since these activities usually involve wrist flexion and extension, there is often some overlap of the two injuries. Well, a golfer can also have a tennis elbow and vice versa.

How can Soft Tissue Therapy help with Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow?

Having a tennis or golfer’s elbow can be very frustrating particularly because it may easily reoccur. It’s painful, forces you to rest and prevents you from playing your sport properly or doing your job appropriate. Sorry, I can’t offer you a quick fix but Soft Tissue Therapy can help to reduce the tension, boost circulation, improve mobility and stimulate the healing process in the affected area. Thus, together with the right remedial exercises supports and makes recovery a lot faster than just taking a rest. Working on muscle strength and proper techniques as well as using the right material will prevent reinjury and achieve long lasting results. The goal of Soft Tissue Therapy is to get you out of an injury not only recovered but stronger than before.
